Course Overview

Mandalas, meaning "circles" in Sanskrit, are sacred symbols that are traditionally used for meditation and mindfulness. In these 4 classes, participants will learn to create 4 unique styles of mandalas – a black-and-white mandala drawing, colorful mandala drawing, nature mandala, and painted dot mandala. Participants will use pencils, colored pencils, found objects, and paint to create the various mandalas. The instructor will demonstrate how to combine patterns, colors, and shapes in new ways.

Artists, non-artists, and children are welcome to join.


Materials needed:

·         sketchbook or 8.5x11 paper

·         pencil and eraser

·         ultra-fine tip sharpie or black pen

·         colored pencils or markers

·         nature findings (leaves, flowers, sticks, rocks, etc)

·         acrylic paint (small 2oz craft paint is fine)

·         canvas or heavy paper

·          small tools to make dots (q-tips, toothpicks, nail heads, pencil erasers, or paintbrushes)


Class 1: Black and White Mandala Drawing - The class will start with a mindfulness exercise about finding your center. Participants will be given a PDF of basic shapes and a bullseye grid pattern that will help guide the mandala drawing. Instructions will be given about how to draw the mandala from the center outwards. Materials needed will be the following: paper, pencil, and pen.


Class 2: Colorful Flower of Life Mandala Drawing - The class will start with a mindfulness exercise about unity. Participants will be given a PDF of basic geometric shapes that will be used to create a colorful Flower of Life mandala. The Flower of Life symbolizes creation and reminds us of the unity of everything. Instructions will be given about how to draw the overlapping circle pattern from the center outwards using colored pencils or markers. Materials needed will be the following: paper, pencil, and colored pencils/markers/pens.


Class 3: Nature Mandala – The class will start with a mindfulness exercise while exploring nature. Participants will collect natural materials to create a sculptural mandala. The mandala will be photographed and drawn. Instructions will be given about how to draw the mandala with basic shapes, colors, and lines. Materials needed will be the following: nature findings, pencil, pen, and colored pencils/markers/pens.


Class 4: Painted Dot Mandala- The class will start with a mindfulness exercise of gentle movement and breath. Participants will be use a PDF bullseye grid pattern that will help guide the mandala dot painting. Instructions will be given to created mandala dot-by-dot from the center outwards. Materials needed will be the following: Small canvas or heavy paper, objects to create dots (Q-tips, toothpicks, nail heads, pencil erasers, or paint brushes), and acrylic paint.
